curriculum vitae

Born in Austria, Reinhard Bartl began his musical life on the violin, before turning to the lute during his studies of pedagogy. As a dedicated accompanist for lute-song repertoire and an experienced continuo player, he plays frequently in concerts throughout Europe, and has taken part in performances with Christina Pluhar, Marius van Altena, and Nigel North.

He is constantly pushing musical boundaries with the exploration of new repertoires, styles and instruments, such as early polyphonic intabulations on renaissance lute and vihuela, the English repertoire of the “Golden Age” of John Dowland and contemporaries (with his ensemble The Queen’s Delight), and instrumental as well as vocal ensemble music on archlute, theorbo and baroque guitar.

He studied with Toyohiko Satoh and Mike Fentross at the department of early music of the Royal Conservatory in The Hague, where he graduated in 2004. He has taken part in numerous master classes with Nigel North, Stephen Stubbs, and Rolf Lislevand.

In addition to playing and teaching the lute, he is also an accomplished woodworker and enjoys designing his own furniture and building instruments.
